I'm back with another "weekly" edition of some of my favorite articles and links from around the intertubes.

  • One of my favorite bands, Belle and Sebastian, has a new musical. Read about it here.

  • This one is for Bill and Jason and our continuing debate on the topic of whether the man named Jesus of Nazareth existed.

  • We've all been there...for whatever reason you've gotten little or no sleep and have to head into work. Here's some tips on getting through those hellish days.

  • Oh Facebook...

  • A great article detailing trying to argue with hardcore capitalists about the difference between property and possessions.

  • It's articles like this that sparks that magical feeling about science. It's simply amazing how quickly technology is progressing and the secrets being unlocked every day.

  • Finally an excuse for my pessimism! Seriously though, this is a good piece on dealing with anxiety.

  • Salon's 5 worst right-wing moments of the week. Enjoy!

  • In this new world where children are coddled and practically wrapped in bubble wrap from birth to the time they're shipped off to college, it's great to read an article on the importance of children's films that are dark and scary.

Weekly Round-UP for the week ending June 7th, 2014

I feel like I need to re-name this feature…One day, it truly will be a weekly one. I promise.

Anyway, without further ado…here is the most interesting things I’ve found on the web over “the last week.”

  • Here's a great article about Jack and Meg White from grantland.com
  • Vassals of Kingsgrave is quickly becoming my favorite of the podcastoficeandfire family of podcasts (sorry Mimi, Amin, Ashley, and Kyle). This one is the 2nd part of a critique of A Song of Ice and Fire and metanarratives within the series. Check it and the 1st installment out, which can be found on Vassals of Kingsgrave.
  • To heavily geek out for a moment, take a look at an article from Buzzfeed about some villains from the Lord of the Ring's universe that are just too big to ever appear on screen.
  • Here's one from Popular Science for all you hipsters out there (or if you're like me, just hipster curious...) or if you're just confused and/or fascinated by hipster culture. Where else are you going to find the beard trend and Darwinian evolution mashed together?
  • Interesing article from The Atlantic about when two worlds collide: environmentalism and local culture.
  • Appy Geek brings an article about Bitcoin and the new internet.
  • Salon brings yet another article detailing how far down the rabbit hole we've gone with global warming.
  • Lastly, Jezebel has the best article about bisexuality that I've read in a long time. Bonus: it comes from a review of Game of Thrones.

That's it for this week. I promise that next week I'll be back with a longer list. They're piling up...
And remember to follow Landspost Thanks and enjoy!

Weekly Round-Up! Week of May 31st

After a bit of a hiatus, here's a big ole' heapin' spoonful of things from around the web.

  • From Rolling Stone, here's a list of the 40 best cult-comedy television shows. I agree with most, but it's just fun scrolling through them and chuckle away as some old gems pop up you probably forgot about. LINK
  • Den of Geek has an article about sequels that you'd think would've been made, umm, like a decade or more ago. LINK
  • This one from Den of Geek makes me squeal with delight and shudder in anxious terror. Please George, I've never been one to rush you, but Winds of Winter would be a great holiday gift this winter...  LINK
  • Our bastard friends at the podcast Vassals of Kingsgrave (the offshoot of the podcast A Podcast of Ice and Fire) have a wonderful one out about all things Twin Peaks and David Lynch. It is more than worth a listen for the fans of the best show ever! LINK
  • Buzzfeed informed me of something I am very happy to know about now.  LINK
  • Buzzfeed also brings a little light-heartedness to the gruesome loss of your favorite Game of Thrones characters. LINK
  • Popular Science has an article describing how Carl Sagan described death to his daughter. Carl, you are dearly missed. LINK
  • One of my new favorite podcasts to go to sleep to. LINK
  • The Atlantic has a great article here. LINK

Gwendoline Christie...ummm...wow!

Great quote from George RR Martin on Lord of the Rings. It really makes me want to go back and re-read it again. It's been a while.

As I read Return of the King, I didn’t want it to be over. That last book blew my mind, particularly the scouring of the Shire. I didn’t like that when I was in high school. The story’s over, and they destroyed the ring — but he didn’t write “and now they lived happily ever after.” Instead, they went home and home was all fucked up. The evil guys had burned down some of the woods; a fascist-like tyranny had taken over. That seemed anticlimactic to me. Frodo didn’t live happily ever after or marry a nice girl hobbit. He was permanently wounded; he was damaged. As a 13 year old, I couldn’t grasp that. Now, every time I re-read The Lord of the Rings — which I do, every few years — I appreciate the brilliance of the scouring of the Shire. That’s part of what lifts the book from all its imitators. There was a real cost to Tolkien’s world. There’s a tremendous sadness at the end of Lord of the Rings, and it has a power. I think that’s partly why people are still reading and re-reading these books.

By the time I finished Lord of the Rings it actually somewhat depressed me, because I didn’t think I could ever do anything of that stature. Fortunately, I got over that.
